VAT Accountant

Location: Aberdeen, Scotland
Duration: 12 month contract with possible extension
Notice period: 4 weeks
Must have right to work in the UK

Purpose of Role:
• The role is to support the UK Finance Team on VAT compliance. Activities include collation, review and completion of VAT returns as well as the enforcement and monitoring of VAT controls

Critical Responsibilities:
• Ensuring that all activities are carried out in a safe manner complying with all regulatory requirements, legislation and HSES Procedures

Areas of Accountability, Responsibility and Competence:
• Advising and consulting with the business on the processes required to ensure indirect taxes are accounted for correctly.
• Preparation of the monthly VAT returns for all the UK VAT registered businesses.
• Carry out relevant accounting entries linked with the VAT accounts of the UK Group.
• Keep aware of developments within the business (across all UK sites) and consider the indirect tax impact.
• Build working relationships in the organisation to ensure the objectives of accurate tax compliance and cost effective management of the indirect taxes is achieved.
• Monitor compliance with VAT controls, especially in the areas of Invoicing, P2P and Travel Expenses
• Legal obligation to submit monthly VAT returns with penalties for non-compliance or error.
• Critically assess the SAP generated VAT figures to establish any errors in posting and to take a skilled and experienced view on the creditability of the end result.
• Submit VAT returns monthly, accurately and on time.
• Meet accounting policies, procedures and guidelines for VAT accounts of the UK Group.
• Monitor the business compliance with VAT controls across peripheral systems
• Any other duty as instructed by your Line Manager

Critical Skills, Qualifications, Experience, etc.:
• Operational experience in dealing with VAT and indirect taxes.
• An understanding of VAT legislation and guidelines.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Numeracy skills critical.
• Educated to degree standard, preferably in a finance discipline.
• Qualified accountant, or part qualified working to full qualification, or significant VAT experience with a reputable accounting firm.
• Focus on technical accuracy and meeting deadlines.
• Ability to communicate effectively with excellent interpersonal, team-working and presentation skills.
• Results focused with a commitment to the delivery of excellent service to the business.
• Willing to challenge existing practices and implement initiatives.
• PC literate, including Excel and SAP.
