Northern Endurance Partnership: The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) is developing onshore and offshore infrastructure needed to transport CO2 from carbon capture projects across Teesside and the Humber – collectively known as the East Coast Cluster - to secure storage under the North Sea. The infrastructure is crucial to achieving net zero in the UK’s most carbon intensive industrial regions. 

NEP is in an incorporated joint venture established solely to develop and operate CO₂ transportation and storage infrastructure on behalf of the NEP Shareholders – bp, Equinor and TotalEnergies. 

In December 2024, NEP announced financial close, giving the green light to proceed to the execution phase of the transportation and storage infrastructure network that will serve three initial carbon capture projects on Teesside: NZT Power, H2Teesside and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture. NEP expects to commence construction from the middle of 2025 with start-up expected in 2028. 

Does the person manage a team? 
This could be direct line manager experience or leadership within an agile structure, e.g. scrum lead, product manager. 
This position has a key role to play in the success of NEP. While there is no line management responsibility, the role will need to coordinate and influence activities across multiple disciplines to ensure successful delivery.

About the role 
• The Subsurface and Wells Lead will be a critical member of NEP reporting to the Technical Manager. 
• As a member of a small team, the Subsurface and Wells Lead will lead NEP’s stewardship of the Carbon Storage (CS) Licenses and CS Permit and be the focal point for licensing and permitting associated with subsurface and wells activities. NEP holds 4 CS licenses currently. 
• The role will work closely with the wider NEP organisation and operating service provider in the delivery of NEP’s objectives. 

Roles and responsibilities 

• Operating service provider – Work closely with the wells and subsurface teams within the operating service provider. Be the NEP focal point for all matters related to wells and subsurface and represent NEP views in meetings. Develop and own the transition plan for transitioning these functions into NEP. 
• Regulatory – Represent NEP (with support from the operating service provider), in its regulatory interaction relating to wells and subsurface activity and manage these relationships. Regulators and Government bodies will include the NSTA, OPRED, HSE, Ofgem and DESNZ. 
• NEP –Attend the Technical Committee as appropriate and be a point of contact for shareholders for this disciplines
• External stakeholders – Support the operating service provider and NEP in technical conferences, discussions and knowledge sharing with industry representative bodies and external stakeholders.
• Wells activity – Manage the Wells Construction Agreement from a NEP perspective. Work closely with the operating service provider, provide challenge, and hold them to account for the delivery of the drilling, wells and completion deliverables, and all other related work. 
• Carbon Storage Licences and Permit – Manage the subsurface component of the Construction and Operating Services Agreement from a NEP perspective including the four CS Licences and CS Permit , as well as the subsurface evaluation of additional stores. Work closely with the operating service provider, provide challenge, and hold them to account for the technical quality of the subsurface deliverables. Understand the subsurface risks and uncertainties and how they impact other enablers and the wider business. 

Experience and qualifications 

Essential:

• Experience or understanding of subsurface evaluation for store appraisal and development, including risk and uncertainty management. 
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work across functions. 
• Ability to maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. 
• Proven ability to challenge conventional thinking and identify and apply innovative and disruptive ideas to complex problems. 
• Proven ability to apply logic and broad business and technical criteria in making decisions. 
• Basic understanding of well construction and operation. 
• A positive attitude towards taking on tasks outside of your core disciplines as may be required from time to time. 

Desirable 

• Understanding of the UK carbon storage licence and regulatory regime. 
• Extensive network within the CCUS community. 
• Understanding of CO2 phase behaviour, and its effect on well design considerations. 
• Recognising the system-wide implications of CO2 flow assurance behaviour. 
• Experience of well intervention activities. 
• Store or field production or injection management. Interactions 
• This role will be based in the NEP IJV (Incorporated Joint Venture). It will be a key interface with all parts of the NEP organisation, as well as shareholders and bp as the operating service provider. It will provide the opportunity to help shape the organisation and develop the organisation’s culture
