Responsible Dam Engineer/ Geotechnical Engineer (Principal)


NES Fircroft are partnering with a global resources client who are looking for a Responsible Dam Engineer/ Geotechnical Engineer (Principal) to join their site based team on a 12 month contract

The Role:
  • This role is offered on a 2/1 roster -  (1 day travel in, 12 days on site, 1 day travel back)
  • Regular exposure to outdoor conditions and potential hazards associated with construction equipment, tailings facilities, water storage facilities, waste rock dumps, engineered and natural slope hazards.


We are looking for a Responsible Dam Engineer / Geotechnical Engineer  to maintain overall stewardship of the Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) and dams during the active closure of a mine in the Northern Territory.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Major Hazards - Closure, you will be responsible for the ongoing management, conformance, and governance of the tailings and water storage facilities in line with internal D5 Standard for Tailings and Water Storage Facilities (WSF) in addition to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).

The RDE should understand the TSFs & dams for which they are responsible, the risks, and how those risks are being managed, including any failures, deficiencies, or opportunities for improvement. This role is accountable for the overall safety and performance of the tailings during capping and closure phase of the mine life cycle.

You will receive mentorship from the Closure Major Hazards team, asset team and wider global closure team. You will be well supported in your journey to becoming responsible for all TSFs and dams during this exciting project.


Duties Include:
Engineering oversight:
  • Responsible for liaising with the Engineer of Record, Designers, Major Projects team, Construction Teams, HSEC, legal, communities and social performance and regulatory affairs and environment teams
Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure the tailings facility is closed in accordance with local and national regulations, company standards, and industry guidelines, such as those from the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM)
Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in dam safety management, closure design, and execution. Recommend and implement innovative practices and technologies to enhance the safety and efficiency of the tailings facility whist maintaining safety as highest priority at all times

Monitoring and Inspection:
  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and surveillance of the tailings facility during closure execution to monitor performance, identify potential hazards, and assess integrity. Maintain detailed records and documentation of all findings

Risk Management:
  • Identify and assess risks associated with the tailings facilities. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and emergency response plans to manage and minimise risks.
  • Accountable for the implementation of a change management system
  • Responsible, alongside the EoR, for the Construction Records Report
  • Responsible for the OMS Manual
  • Understand the content and requirements of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and work with the GISTM Closure team to implement the standard
  • Provide day to day leadership of the Engineer of Record for active closure matters
  • You will have experience undertaking scoping of studies, site investigations, preparing budgets and risk management for tailings facilities
  • Undertake inspections, reviews and audits and address any non-conformance's. 

The Requirements:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Engineering Geology, Mining Engineering or related degree
  • A Master’s Degree in Soil Mechanics or Geotechnical Engineering or professional registration (P.Eng, CPEng, or equivalent) will be highly regarded
  • Previous professional experience with design, construction, operation and closure/capping of tailings storage facilities and dams
  • Experience working on-site for a mine owner
  • Extensive experience in a senior engineering role (preferably geotechnical/engineering geology/tailings/civil)
  • Deep understanding of GISTM and national/international guidelines (ANCOLD, ICOLD, MAC, CDA, USBR)
  • Proficiency in geotechnical analysis, data interpretation, and the use of relevant software tools (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD, stability analysis software)
  • Program, project or client management experience
It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • A strong understanding of dam safety monitoring equipment and interpretation of data
  • Experience in supervising the construction of tailings storage facilities and/or dams
