Engineering Director – Bakersfield, CA

Job Summary:
The Engineering Director will lead the team of engineers, inspectors, laboratory technicians, and technical document control staff and contractors, to support production at Bakersfield Renewable Fuels.

Essential Functions:
● Manage team of 30+ engineers, inspectors, laboratory technicians, and technical
document control staff and contractors, ensuring that employees have the right
resources, tools, and support to achieve their job
● Provide technical input and specifications for commercial negotiations of product offtake
partners and feedstock providers, including performance guarantee evaluations
● Provide technical support to assure regulatory compliance efforts are met, including
OSHA/PSM safety incidents and incident investigations, California/EPA air and water
environmental permit modifications, and permit reporting data quality issues
● Specify engineering software requirements, evaluate market available options, and
engage with IT through implementation to assure it meets biorefinery’s long-term
technical needs
● Identify and drive to completion internal work processes, procedures and software
systems that staff need to be trained and using for the commissioning and startup of the
biorefinery to meet regulatory, environmental, commercial, and contractual requirements
● Directs a team of diverse engineering and technical managers, engineers, and subject
matter experts to support both daily G&P operations and project development execution.
● Partners with Operations, Project Management Teams, and other support organizations
to deliver safe, compliant, reliable, and efficient operations and project
development/execution
● Develops a collaborative teamwork approach with business partners.
● Shapes and implements the development of fit-for-purpose engineering standards and
specifications, including its project management process, balancing risk management
with cost and organizational efficiency.
● Accountable for the annual development and execution of centrally managed operating
expense programs, which improve risk-related aspects of integrity, design, and personal
and process safety.
● Strategically distributes workloads; ensures that projects and support activities are completed within the intended timeframe and budget. Maintains assigned workloads in a flexible environment to meet the changing needs of Operations Projects.
● Mentors managers and individual contributors in the areas of customer support, project development, engineering design, and operational safety to deliver G&P’s strategies and goals.
● Clearly communicates expectations to managers; monitors and evaluates individual and team performance compared to expectations; determines the areas of strength and weakness of personnel and guides career development; appraises personnel of their performance status in a timely manner.
● Establishes and evaluates group goals in alignment with departmental goals and clearly communicates expectations; evaluates organizational performance versus expectations to determine the areas of strength and weakness.

Education and Experience:
● Bachelors degree in engineering (mechanical, civil, chemical, petroleum, control
systems,
● 10-15 years of experience in engineering roles, with 5+ years in leadership roles
required

Physical Requirements:
● Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
● Prolonged periods of standing and walking
● Must be able to pass a physical test of pushing, pulling, and lifting a minimum of 50 lbs
● Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
● Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
● Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
